Design Aesthetic: Sophisticated Sporting

In an attempt to make sophisticated dressing more functional, designers in Paris put an athletic spin on classicism. Making its return to the runway this season, Miu Miu’s micro mini skirts received a tennis-inspired update and were styled with ballet flats inspired by Miuccia Prada’s junior ballet phase. In Hermes’ luxe heritage collection, models sported stretchy unitards, sport jackets, and over the knee socks. Leather, suede, and sheer knits elevated the collection further.

Design Aesthetic: Twisted Tailoring

“We really wanted to focus on sculptural tailoring, almost couture-like,” said Lucie Meier of Jil Sander’s latest collection. Opening with a wool skirt suit, its jacket sculpted with an hourglass volume, the collection did just that. Other designers in Milan also focused on tailoring this season, adding unexpected elements for a somewhat surreal take on tradition. At Bottega Veneta, models sported curved coats and whimsical platform heels in fur and woven leather. Prada featured tailored coats decorated with rings of faux fur and feathers.

Design Aesthetic: Youthful Discord

Aware of the disconnect in the world around us, London designers channeled chaos into craftsmanship. Inspired by a growing local network of skilled artisans that made the collection titled “The Hands That Heal Us” possible, Bethany Williams’ playful patterns and knits celebrated the power of craft. A similar ode to the global power of fashion, Matty Bovan created a chaotic, yet soulful collection inspired by the “kids who have grown up as immersed in other cultures and feel a need to rebel against their symbols of patriotism.”

Design Aesthetic: Subversive Romance

This season, designers explored the dichotomy between hard and soft, durable and delicate, masculine and feminine. Finding this balance, Elena Velez combined strong materials with romantic styles to reflect the toughness of femininity. At LaQuan Smith, models strutted down the runway in form-fitting silhouettes and layered cut outs, while, at Dion Lee, models wore contrasting looks that combined oversized cargo pants with elegant lace. “There’s strength in beauty,” Chris Peters said of Duncan’s subversively romantic collection.
